Thomas Burberry invented the trench, designed in his patented gabardine fabric, for soldiers to wear during World War I. With it’s many pockets, D-Rings to attach equipment to and it’s waterproof fabric, the design was quickly adopted by the British Army and worn by officers on the front lines. About 50 years later the design was made universally famous by Humphrey Bogart in the film “Casablanca”, and soon after that the women of the world took over and made it their own, incorporating the piece into their closets with ease. Since then designers across the world have taken liberties with the trench, playing with unique fabrics, details and cuts modernizing the style and making it a staple of their collections.
